Green Schools

Liscannor N.S. are very proud to have achieved 6 Green flags since becoming a Green-schools participant. The flags we hold include:
1. Litter & Waste: This is the first theme, focusing on reducing waste and promoting recycling within the school.
2. Energy: After successfully addressing litter and waste, schools move on to energy conservation.
3. Water: The next step involves water conservation, aiming to reduce water usage within the school.
4. Travel: This theme focuses on promoting sustainable transportation methods, such as walking, cycling, or using public transport.
5. Biodiversity: The fifth theme centers on enhancing biodiversity within the school grounds and the wider community.
6. Global Citizenship Litter & Waste: Connecting litter and waste reduction to global issues.
Green-schools are very active and every year our school elects a committee which has a pupil from every class in the school on it. Meetings are held where the children discuss and plan actions to maintain previous green-schools efforts and to achieve our next green flag. Some of the wonderful work being done in our school includes:
❖ Vegetable garden
In the past two years we have had wonderful yields of spuds, carrots, courgettes, onions, rhubarb, herbs and pumpkins from our beautiful veggie garden. We have shared these vegetables with families and also had whole school chip parties and carrot stick parties! We also have two crabapple trees and some wildflower beds that are thriving. The parents’ association and families within the school do wonderful maintenance work during our summer holidays whilst during the school year the pupils, Ms. Falvey and children/teachers from every class help to maintain our garden. The children love the school garden: take a look at some of our photos!
❖ Native trees with Hometree
In 2022, we planted a number of native trees (oak, whitethorn, blackthorn) inside of the school wall with the help of the local organisation Hometree. These have been growing really well and were helpful in developing biodiversity on our grounds. Trees were also given to pupils to plant at home, thanks to Hometree for their support with this project. We also created a log pile habitat for smaller creatures as part of the biodiversity flag.
❖ Litter picks & Village Clean-ups.
Liscannor N.S. are very proud to help keep our community clean. Whole village clean-ups by the entire school as well as targeted smaller litter picking efforts are carried out on an ongoing basis.
❖ March in Green with the Green-schools team
St. Patrick’s Day walk to school. - To remind families of our green flag for travel an annual March to school in green is organised. This involves pupils, parents/guardians gathering at a shared location and walking to school together. 5th & 6th class pupils highlighted how small changes like these can have big impacts on greenhouse gas emissions during our travel flag. This annual walk is a reminder to continue those efforts.
❖ Global litter and waste flag award celebration day
This year having been awarded our 6th flag the pupils were treated to a greenschools celebration day. Novelty games, cake and a whole-school assembly helped to celebrate the ongoing wonderful efforts of pupils and staff alike. The children thoroughly enjoyed this celebration.
We also featured in the Clare Champion in July 2025 for our "Take 3 for the Sea" campaign.
We hope you enjoy this slideshow of some of our pupils who loved taking part in our various Green School initiatives over the last year.
