Illness

Viruses and routine illnesses are an unavoidable part of school life, particularly during the winter months when they spread rapidly among children and staff alike.

Children should not be sent to school if they are too unwell to participate in the normal activities associated with the school day.

If your child has an infectious disease, e.g. chickenpox/ vomiting bug, we would ask that you notify us as soon as possible so that we can work to prevent the spread of the infection to other children and staff.

All sickness leading to absence from school should be reported via the “Absences” tab on your Aladdin home page on the morning of the illness.

The following is a list of the most commonly occurring illnesses in schools, but is not an exhaustive list. Please click on the relevant item for a direct link to the HSE information and recommended treatment of same:

Illness at School:

When a child is ill in school, a parent will be contacted if the child has a high temperature, is vomiting or is continually complaining of feeling unwell. A parent will also be contacted if a child suffers a serious injury involving their head, teeth or a possible broken bone. Cuts & grazes will be dealt with using First Aid.

Returning to School following Illness:

Children should only return to school following illness if they are well enough to participate in all aspects of school life – e.g. outdoor play, PE lessons. As always, exceptions apply for students with broken bones or returning from an extended period of illness. Such instances should be communicated via Aladdin to your child’s class teacher.

In the case of an infectious disease such as Norovirus, children should be kept at home for 48 hours after the symptoms cease.

We would ask that parents follow the HSE guidelines and the advice of trained medical professionals such as your GP or pharmacist in the event of your child becoming ill.
